TERMS OF VENERY
What’s your favorite term of venery? We enjoy of a shrewdness of apes, though a kindle of kittens is always nice to have around the house.

I never get tired of these.  A drift of hogs!  An exaltation of larks!

A blog post by Bennington’s “Embedded Librarian” - what a dream job!

crossettlibrary:

Today has just found me worn out.  I’ve just been super tired all day, struggling to make it to the end and hopefully get some rest.  And all my class work hasn’t been helping.  Let me explain.

I’ve taken on a new, experimental, role at work: Embedded Librarian.  (It feeds into my Technology Resources and Outreach roles.)  Basically, I’m working with two separate classes to provide more in-depth research help.  In one course, I attend each class, doing the readings along with the students, and then responding to reference inquiries from faculty and students in class as well as in the Facebook group.  I also flag articles of interest and provide context to the discussions that are taking place.  In the other course, I did some of the intro reading and then as the students chose topics for a research paper, I met with each of them individually during class time to talk about their topic, provide research direction, and will be a go-to person throughout the course as they develop the topic.

In the first course, I’m doing quite a bit of course-specific reading.  In the second, I’m reading on a wider variety of topics, to provide a base of knowledge as the students delve into their papers.  So now, with that background, we can talk about tonight.

“To be President of Bennington College one needs the wisdom of Solomon, the patience of a saint and the tenacity of Jaws.”

benningtonstudents:

Things have been a little slow in the office lately so I’ve been brushing up on my Bennington history. This morning I read through “Benningway: A student’s guide to Bennington College, 1978-1980”. It was quite an entertaining read and full of beautiful pictures like this one:

I can’t help thinking, “those were the days” when I read things like, “Each house has its own pet regulations – some are no pets, some have limited numbers of

Serious Fun in PhysicsIn yesterday’s Physics I lab (Forces & Motion with Dr Hugh Crowl) in honor of Halloween, postbac and undergrad students built a trebuchet and launched pumpkins outside Dickinson Science Building. Breaking into teams, each team focused on measuring specific data: angle, velocity, range and timing among others. Careful measurements of each pumpkin taken beforehand factor in to the final result: measuring the effect of air resistance.
